Selena’s Battle with Depression and Anxiety

Selena’s Battle with Depression and Anxiety

The American pop sensation, Selena Gomez, has had a long standing history with anxiety and depression. She herself has admitted to this, and believes she can never overcome it.

To truly understand the matter, we have to take a closer look into the ‘glamorous’ life of Selena Gomez. She began her career as a child TV star, and immediately gained fame through her role in the widely acclaimed series “Wizards of Waverly Place”. She later met Justin Bieber and that’s when things started to get complicated.

Every relationships has its ups and downs, but when we’re talking about Jelena, that’s approximately seven years of roller-coaster drama and emotions. This relationship reportedly took its toll on Selena, who started to drift apart into the timeless world of despair.

Gomez has had her fair share of health problems too. Last summer, she revealed that she underwent a kidney transplant due to complications from a rare disease known as lupus. Luckily, the surgery was a success and had no permanent implications.

On October the 11th, news broke that Selena had reportedly joined a mental health facility. Many people were quick to judge and linked it with the engagement of Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin. The truth however, is much more complex.

Depression is more than just a break up; it is caused by a series of high-stress events that lead you to a state of hopelessness and despair. Most people believe that anxiety and depression are fabricated and fictitious, but Gomez is the living testament of this certitude.

Not only Selena, but a number of high profile celebrities have fallen prey to the pitiless world of depression; A-listers like Demi Lovato, Cara Delevingne have confessed about suffering at the hands of the same menace. When left untreated, depression leads to self harm, as we have learnt from the suicides of artists like Chester Bennington and Robin Williams.

Selena, however, is still hopeful as she had stated in one of her interviews that she would be putting her health at the forefront in 2018. She said, “There won’t be a day when I’m like, ‘Here I am in a pretty dress – I won!’ I think it’s a battle I’m gonna have to face for the rest of my life, and I’m OK with that because I know that I’m choosing myself over anything else.” Although, she has been working on her next album slowly and steadily for a long time and released three well-received singles last year, she is prepared to keep fans waiting.

With recent news about Selena’s discharge from the mental health facility, let us all hope that the esteemed artist finally manages to exterminate all the roots of anxiety, and succeeds in emerging from the chains of anguish and gloom.
